Gum nuts are the seed heads/pods left behind when some of the Eucalypt species have finished flowering.
They're very hard, they retain their eucalyptus smell for a year or more and just about all Australian parrots, parakeets, rosellas and budgies love to crack them open.
Not only budgies but most of the Australian parrots in the wild, such as the Rosellas, various cockatoos, cockatiels and grass parakeets feed on Eucalyptus trees and devour fresh Eucalyptus flowers.

There are three wild budgerigars among the gum nuts in this photograph.
Their natural camouflage makes them difficult to detect.
See if you can spot them.
